Welcome
Welcome to the home page of the official website of Nucleus 92 Incorporated. Nucleus 92 Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 1991 of the Australian Capital Territory.
The purpose of Nucleus 92 Inc. is to promote the widespread adoption and use of nuclear fission as the primary source of sustainable electrical and thermal power generation in Australia and throughout the world.
About this site
This website is intended to provide information on nuclear power tailored to a general non-professional audience, and to provide details of Nucleus 92 Inc., such as our objectives, how to join, how to donate and so forth. It is not intended to provide highly technical information on nuclear power topics to scientist, engineers, economists and related professionals. For people interested in delving further into the technicalities of each subject, links to appropriate sites are provided in the relevant sections.
Quick Facts about Nuclear Power
Environmentally friendly
Nuclear power has the lowest level impact on the environment of any major power source, from mining, through plant operation and on to waste disposal. More than any of the alternatives, nuclear power fulfils the environmental injunction to "Tread lightly upon the Earth".
Safe
Nuclear power has the best safety record of any major power source, even when the statistics for the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents are included.
Reliable
The capacity factor (the percentage of time the plants are running at full capacity) are now typically above 90%. This is much better than any of its rivals. Standard operating lifetime for nuclear power plants is now held to be sixty years, and will probably become longer as experience is gained in maintenance and refits for older plants.
Clean
Nuclear power plants produce no particulate pollution, no greenhouse gases, no problematic sludge ponds, no noxious fumes, no acid rain, and no increase in background radiation.
Sustainable
There is enough nuclear fuel naturally available in the Earth's crust to supply power from breeder reactors vastly in excess of our current needs for hundreds of millions of years, or to supply our current level of all forms of power consumption for billions of years.
Affordable
Nuclear power is much cheaper than any non-hydro renewable power source, already rivals the price range of standard baseload and peak power generation from coal and gas, and has the potential with reformed regulatory frameworks and advancing technology to become the cheapest power source of any kind.
